Top 50 Farmers
Charles Post
Top 50 Farmers is an acceleration platform paving the way for regenerative agriculture to be scaled from soil to gut. We identify the farmers who are role modeling what the future of farming looks like and share their stories. We also connect them with industry executives and pioneering thought leaders to unlock new opportunities across the value chain.
Charles Post is an ecologist, an outdoorsman, sustainability strategy consultant, and award winning creative.
As a Creative Director for Top 50 Farmers, his focus is on communicating the brand's values, mission, and stories including introducing the world and broader agriculture community to the ways in which Top 50 Farmers is working with different stakeholders to scale regenerative agriculture across Europe. Charles is also responsible for developing the strategy and content showcasing the pioneering farmers leading the regenerative agriculture movement, highlighting their practices and impact and how this movement has fantastic potential to transform our home planet, and the food systems that sustain it, for good.
Before Top 50 Farmers, Charles spent nearly a decade studying at UC Berkeley and working as a research scientist focused on wild and working landscapes. He earned his B.S. and Masters degree in Ecology, studying under the celebrated researcher, Dr. Mary Power. Since then, Charles built a bridge between his science background and creative ventures through his widely followed Instagram account (@charles_post), recent podcast The Traverse with Chris Burkard, award-winning films, and widely published writing and photography.
Charles also works as a sustainability strategy consultant helping brands like Dometic, GORE-TEX, Norrøna, Sitka Gear and Hipcamp develop and activate environmentally guided strategy, communications, and projects that can positively impact our home planet. He is a member of the IUCN Species Survival Commission, a Surfrider Foundation Ambassador and a Fellow at the Explorers Club.
Charles lives in Norway’s Lofoten Islands north of the arctic circle with his wife, Rachel Pohl, his samoyeds, Knute and Rowan, and rescue cat, Hannah. You can learn more about Charles by visiting his website, charlespost.com or following along on his Instagram account @charles_post.
What was your journey into regenerative agriculture?
My journey began with a childhood passion for gardening, which evolved into a lifelong commitment to stewardship and regenerative agriculture. As a student at U.C. Berkeley, I managed a garden for a large student cooperative and earned a degree in watershed ecology, focusing on rangelands. My career as a field scientist across the American West deepened my understanding of working landscapes, leading me to graduate studies at U.C. Berkeley in food web ecology.
In the years that followed, I focused my work on science communication and filmmaking, contributing to award-winning films like Island Earth and Sky Migrations, my directorial debut. My work shifted as I recognized there was an opportunity to help outdoor brands impact nature for good. I joined SITKA Gear as their Ecosystem Brand Manager, launching their SITKA Ecosystem Grants Program. Later, I took on a role as Land Stewardship Manager at Hipcamp, where I developed initiatives recognized by Fast Company as part of their World Changing Ideas competition. Throughout these periods, I continued my writing and filmmaking, highlighting the importance of stewardship and conservation in restoring ecological balance.
What are you passionate about?
I'm passionate about the confluence of wild places, wildlife, and stewardship. I believe it's here, at this junction, that we have tremendous potential to preserve the magic of our natural world and support the systems - both wild and human - that facilitate a healthy, resilient, and biodiverse planet. A finer thread amongst my tapestry of care and enthusiasm are birds who offer me a perennial focal point, a place to direct much of my love, energy and curiosity, while also informing my work, focusing my gaze and inspiring how I engage with the world as a creative, activist, and changemaker.
