Stefan Schörling transformed his 426-hectare Swedish farm into a circular system without any guidance. Now he's leading a community of farmers to scale these regenerative practices across 3,000 hectares.

Their story

The Visionary Farmer

At 70, Stefan Schörling decided his family's fourth-generation farm needed a complete transformation. After watching conventional farming degrade his Swedish soils for over two decades, Stefan knew he had to act. "With over 20 years of experience in conventional farming, I have witnessed firsthand the decline and degradation of our soils," he explains. "Recognizing the unsustainability of this approach, I shifted my focus to studying and implementing regenerative practices."

Stefan didn't just change methods; he pioneered an entirely new approach. Starting his regenerative journey 6-10 years ago, he spent years developing what would become a completely circular farming system, learning through trial and determination rather than following established protocols.

The Magic of Circular Agriculture

Hasta Gård operates on circular principles with zero synthetic inputs. Through Stefan's intercropping system, the farm grows oats, buckwheat, hemp, flax, peas, legumes, and oilseeds that create their own fertility cycle. These diverse crops work together, with legumes fixing nitrogen while deep-rooted plants improve soil structure.

"Our crops exhibit stronger root development, fostering enhanced interaction with soil biology," Stefan notes. "This ensures a higher degree of nutrient transfer to the plants and increased sugar production. Additionally, the crops show greater resilience to pathogens and abiotic stress."

The results include increased organic matter, improved water retention, and enhanced microbial activity. Stefan's approach proves that working with nature's intelligence creates abundance while the farm produces biochar, fermented biostimulants, and animal feed from crop residues.

Building What Doesn't Exist

When Stefan realized the equipment he needed wasn't available commercially, he became an inventor by necessity. "Our farm's growth necessitated custom-built processing facilities, but the market for such specialized equipment is limited. We were forced to invent and produce the equipment needed."

His integrated processing facility transforms biomass into valuable products: biochar for soil amendment, pelletized fertilizers, specialized animal feeds, and fermented plant extracts.

Building Community for Scale

Stefan understands that agricultural transformation requires collaboration. What began as his personal journey has evolved into something larger—a coordinated effort to support regenerative farming across 3,000 hectares in his region through partnerships with neighboring Swedish farmers.

"Our goal is for Hasta Gård to be a reference example and educational center, serving as a model for scaling up these practices," he emphasizes. Stefan isn't trying to farm more land himself; instead, he's creating a support network where multiple farms can implement regenerative practices together, sharing resources and knowledge.

The farm serves as a learning center where farmers and researchers experience circular agriculture firsthand. Through workshops and demonstrations, Stefan shares both practical techniques and the patient problem-solving approach that made his transformation possible. His approach combines traditional farming wisdom with innovative solutions, showing that sustainability and productivity work together rather than compete.
