“What is my role in this ecosystem?”

That’s the first question Jessica asks when she steps into a field.

After years between Ibiza and England, Jessica made Ibiza her permanent home in 2019. With no traditional farming background, just a deep curiosity and commitment, she stepped into agriculture as a response to climate change and the need for ecological balance on the island.

Over the last 60 years, agriculture in Ibiza has quietly faded, pushed aside by booming tourism. Fields once rich with tradition were left unattended, but Jess saw an opportunity. Not just to grow food, but to revive balance to restore what was lost in a way that worked with nature, not against it.

In 2020, on a single abandoned field, she began. What started as one quiet act of restoration became Can Purtell, a 35-hectare regenerative grain project redefining what farming can look like in Ibiza. No barns, no fences, just a living, breathing landscape in recovery.

Now, with drought-resistant ancient grains and plant-based soil fertility, she’s part of a new generation reclaiming land for organic agriculture. And in doing so, she’s redefining what it means to be a farmer on an island better known for clubs than crops.

Vienna is expanding. 21,000 people are expected to move into the Southern edge of the city by 2030. In this neighborhood, Andreas Gugumuck is the last farmer standing in the 125-hectare urban development area in Rothneusiedl (Vienna).

Yet, instead of resisting the city’s expansion, Andreas is working with the government to reimagine how food can be at the heart of urban planning.

Fifteen years ago, Andreas left his career in IT to take over his family’s farm transforming it into a model of circular, sustainable food production and reviving a centuries-old Viennese tradition of snail farming.

Today, Gugumuck serves as a widely recognized point of reference for urban green space transformation, showcasing how land can be reimagined to boost food security, create jobs, foster biodiversity, and lower emissions.

Andreas has played a key role in contributing to @zukunftshof project, which aims to make Vienna a regenerative, circular food system. He also initiated a citizens’ council to bring politicians, administrators, and residents into open dialogue about the future of urban food system and has contributed to Hamburg’s urban agriculture initiative.

Feorh, an old English word meaning life, existence, soul, is more than a name. It’s a declaration of intent.

At just 26, Doug Dawson arrived in Sussex with a vision for something better. Raised on conventional dairy and arable farms in Scotland, he knew industrial agriculture inside out, but something never sat right. Even as a child, he knew: this couldn’t be the only way. @_feorh_ was born from that knowledge on a piece of land ready to be brought back to life.

The farm’s evolution deepened when Doug inherited a herd of Sussex cattle from a late mentor. Rather than let them be sold into the industrial food chain, Doug took them in, along with 30 Romney sheep, and made a quiet but radical commitment to honor their lives not just as livestock, but as ecological collaborators.

Now, under a system of regenerative grazing, they roam freely, restoring the land with every step. Their purpose goes beyond production; they are tools for rebuilding soil health, stimulating biodiversity, and deepening the relationship between land and life. And from this slow, respectful system comes a gift: incredible, nutrient-dense beef. But that beef is a byproduct, not the goal.

Doug’s journey began in the highlands of Scotland surrounded by wide skies, rugged land, and a childhood shaped by traditional dairy and arable farming.

But even as a boy, he felt something was off.

The agricultural methods he saw were at odds with the rhythms of nature. That early dissonance planted a seed of doubt. He didn’t have the vocabulary for it then, but he could feel that the food system was broken.

Doug’s turning point didn’t come in the field, but through a book called “Restoration Agriculture” by Mark Shepard.

It hit him like a revelation.

The book reignited his purpose and gave his intuition language and legitimacy that farming could heal – not harm. It reframed farming not as extraction, but as participation in a living, breathing ecosystem.

Doug moved from Scotland to Sussex, England and with his partner Maeve @maevebaines, they founded Feorh, a small-scale farm named after the Old English word for life force, soul, existence.

That name says everything.

This wasn’t just about food anymore. It was about soul work, stewardship, and building a new model for how land and animals could be cared for, one that looked generations ahead.

Doug’s journey began in the highlands of Scotland surrounded by wide skies, rugged land, and a childhood shaped by traditional dairy and arable farming.

But even as a boy, he felt something was off.

The agricultural methods he saw were at odds with the rhythms of nature. That early dissonance planted a seed of doubt. He didn’t have the vocabulary for it then, but he could feel that the food system was broken.

Doug’s turning point didn’t come in the field, but through a book called “Restoration Agriculture” by Mark Shepard.

It hit him like a revelation.

The book reignited his purpose and gave his intuition language and legitimacy that farming could heal – not harm. It reframed farming not as extraction, but as participation in a living, breathing ecosystem.

Doug moved from Scotland to Sussex, England and with his partner Maeve @maevebaines, they founded Feorh, a small-scale farm named after the Old English word for life force, soul, existence.

That name says everything.

This wasn’t just about food anymore. It was about soul work, stewardship, and building a new model for how land and animals could be cared for, one that looked generations ahead.

Every farmer who applied for Top 50 Farmers is an inspiration and role model for what the future of farming can look like.

While we wish we could welcome everyone into the cohort, we only have 50 spots, which of course beckons the questions “How do you make the selection?”

Now that the Top 50 Farmers 2025 cohort is published, we want to provide more transparency into the selection process and the considerations that go into assembling a diverse cohort.

Here’s what the process looks like:

✅ Every application is reviewed by multiple experts ensuring different perspectives in the scoring. This year’s Selection Committee had 9 members representing a diverse mix of farmers, scientists, professors and storytellers.

✅ Each application is scored across 5 key areas: Regenerative Practices & Measured Impact, Knowledge Sharing, Vision & Leadership, Storytelling, and Innovation. The applications with the highest score moves forward into the Top 50.

✅ Finally, strategic considerations such as country caps were implemented to ensure diversity - in this case representation from underrepresented European nations.
This was our first year running the application and selection process for Top 50 Farmers.

We’ve already learned a lot on how we can improve the process and look forward to implementing these changes next year!

While not every farmer who applies will be selected, the recognition of fifty farmers each year is a celebration of the entire industry. We believe that a rising tide lifts all boats—each new cohort of Top 50 Farmers not only paves the way for the next generation, but also inspires others to follow suit and take bold steps toward regenerative agriculture.

Importantly, Top 50 Farmers is not a ranking. We believe each farmer brings something unique and valuable to the table.
