David De Brito got into regenerative farming after stumbling upon Alan Savory’s Ted Talk “How to fight desertification and reverse climate change.”

One video led to many books, and suddenly David found himself standing at the edge of a vast, necessary truth: the soil beneath our feet could either save us or vanish, taking us with it.

What began as curiosity turned into a life mission: to regenerate land in order to regenerate life, restoring soil, communities, and the vital bond between people and nature.

With his wife Anna de Brito and co-founder Thomas Sterchi, he leads @terramayportugal, a 560-hectare living model of resilience in Portugal’s Alentejo region that feeds 500 families and produces 80% of its own food, water, and energy.

He sees the land not in isolation, but as part of a broader social and ecological web.

“For us, being rich is having access to the best food in the world.” David says.

“We need many islands of regeneration producing high quality food for a smaller quantity of production. This will change the world.”

When Felipe Pasini and Dayana Andrade arrived in Salento, Puglia in 2021, they found a landscape scarred by Xylella fastidiosa, a disease which killed millions of olive trees in Southern Italy. Experts in syntropic farming, they knew that by following nature’s blueprint they could restore balance in the land.

Felipe Pasini spent nearly two decades immersed in the forests of Brazil, working side-by-side with legendary agronomist Ernst Götsch. There, he learned the language of syntropy and how ecosystems organize themselves to enhance life, abundance, and resilience.

Along with his partner Dayana Andrade @dayana_andd, Felipe co-authored Vida em Sintropia (Life in Syntropy), a book that became a touchstone for a growing movement.

Part storytelling, part technical blueprint, Life in Syntropy carries a powerful message: regenerative farming isn’t a theory, it’s a proven path forward.
Then came a call from Southern Italy.

In the fall of 2021, Felipe and Dayana arrived in Puglia to collaborate with German entrepreneurs Jan-Gisbert Schultze, Paul-Bernhard Kallen, and Christoph Braun who had acquired a farm in the heart of a region infected by Olive Quick Decline Syndrome (Xylella fastidiosa).

Together, they regenerated 9 hectares through syntropic farming. 3 years later, the transformation is notable.

Soil organic matter has increased from 0.01% to 2% and over 20,000 plants and trees representing more than 50 varieties have been planted integrating native species with a mix of productive and non-productive plants.

At @slowgrow.ch, Matthias and his team have created a replicable model for scaling regenerative agriculture through mosaic farming, a method that uses high-precision GPS so that all machinery drives in the exact same tracks year after year.

The aim?

Limit soil compaction and foster long-term fertility.

But like many regenerative pioneers, he quickly ran into a bottleneck: the machinery they needed simply didn’t exist.

So, he built it.

With a small team, Matthias began prototyping lightweight, autonomous machines tailored to the realities of regenerative systems ones that reduce labor, work around unpredictable weather, and respect the soil.

This experimentation led to the founding of @hoflabor in 2021 with Dr. Petrissa Eckle: an independent on-farm innovation hub where regenerative agriculture meets engineering.

Together, SlowGrow and HofLabor became a unique partnership, a working farm and an innovation hub for the future of agriculture.

In 2024, they expanded to a 40-hectare city-owned site close to Zurich, transforming it into a living lab where farmers, researchers, and policymakers can see regeneration in action.

It’s a bold vision for urban food systems one that earned the Prix Climat in 2022 for proving that biodiversity and food production can go hand in hand.

This experimentation led to the founding of @hoflabor in 2021 with Dr. Petrissa Eckle: an independent on-farm innovation hub where regenerative agriculture meets engineering.

Together, SlowGrow and HofLabor became a unique partnership, a working farm and an innovation hub for the future of agriculture.

In 2024, they expanded to a 40-hectare city-owned site close to Zurich, transforming it into a living lab where farmers, researchers, and policymakers can see regeneration in action.

Determined to be part of the solution, Howard enrolled in a Master’s in Organic Agriculture at Wageningen University at age 36. The program blends agroecology and social science, focusing on developing resilient food systems that balance human needs with environmental protection.

And that’s exactly what Howard did.

After graduating, he stepped into the field, literally, with his partner, Claudi Rudorf, becoming farmers dedicated to putting knowledge into action and reshaping how we grow our food.

Today, their work is rooted at the regenerative farm @de_biesterhof. With support from the citizen cooperative @landvanons, they are not just breaking ground with their practices, but with their ownership model as well.

At just 26, Doug Dawson arrived in Sussex with a vision for something better. Raised on conventional dairy and arable farms in Scotland, he knew industrial agriculture inside out, but something never sat right. Even as a child, he knew: this couldn’t be the only way. @_feorh_ was born from that knowledge on a piece of land ready to be brought back to life.

The farm’s evolution deepened when Doug inherited a herd of Sussex cattle from a late mentor. Rather than let them be sold into the industrial food chain, Doug took them in, along with 30 Romney sheep, and made a quiet but radical commitment to honor their lives not just as livestock, but as ecological collaborators.

Now, under a system of regenerative grazing, they roam freely, restoring the land with every step. Their purpose goes beyond production; they are tools for rebuilding soil health, stimulating biodiversity, and deepening the relationship between land and life. Every farmer who applied for Top 50 Farmers is an inspiration and role model for what the future of farming can look like.

While we wish we could welcome everyone into the cohort, we only have 50 spots, which of course beckons the questions “How do you make the selection?”

Now that the Top 50 Farmers 2025 cohort is published, we want to provide more transparency into the selection process and the considerations that go into assembling a diverse cohort.

Here’s what the process looks like:

✅ Every application is reviewed by multiple experts ensuring different perspectives in the scoring. This year’s Selection Committee had 9 members representing a diverse mix of farmers, scientists, professors and storytellers.

✅ Each application is scored across 5 key areas: Regenerative Practices & Measured Impact, Knowledge Sharing, Vision & Leadership, Storytelling, and Innovation. The applications with the highest score moves forward into the Top 50.

✅ Finally, strategic considerations such as country caps were implemented to ensure diversity - in this case representation from underrepresented European nations.
This was our first year running the application and selection process for Top 50 Farmers.

We’ve already learned a lot on how we can improve the process and look forward to implementing these changes next year!

While we wish we could welcome everyone into the cohort, we only have 50 spots, which of course beckons the questions “How do you make the selection?”

Now that the Top 50 Farmers 2025 cohort is published, we want to provide more transparency into the selection process and the considerations that go into assembling a diverse cohort.

Here’s what the process looks like:

✅ Every application is reviewed by multiple experts ensuring different perspectives in the scoring. This year’s Selection Committee had 9 members representing a diverse mix of farmers, scientists, professors and storytellers.

✅ Each application is scored across 5 key areas: Regenerative Practices & Measured Impact, Knowledge Sharing, Vision & Leadership, Storytelling, and Innovation. The applications with the highest score moves forward into the Top 50.

✅ Finally, strategic considerations such as country caps were implemented to ensure diversity - in this case representation from underrepresented European nations.
This was our first year running the application and selection process for Top 50 Farmers.

We’ve already learned a lot on how we can improve the process and look forward to implementing these changes next year!

As a co-founder of the @agriculturaregenerativaiberica in Iberia and a skilled facilitator, she has spent years building strong networks and connections among farmers and visionaries across Spain and Portugal. Ana is also a cornerstone of the @we_are_eara as an internal organizational process and community care facilitator.

Ana’s approach is centered on collaboration, connection, and the belief that regenerating both our soils and relationships is essential for addressing the pressing challenges of our time.

His expertise lies in transforming conventional farms into resilient, soil-first systems that are both profitable and sustainable.

As the Co-Founder of @soilcapital , Nicolas has played a key role in helping over 200,000 hectares of farmland transition to regenerative practices across 15 countries. Under his leadership, Soil Capital launched Europe’s first certified carbon payment program, unlocking over €4 million in payments to farmers improving soil health.

A driving force in the regenerative movement, Nicolas continues to support farmers in France, Belgium, and the UK in large-scale soil regeneration. We’re honored to have his deep agronomic expertise shaping our selection process! 🚜🌍

Located on a stunning 600-hectare site just outside Paris, @campus_hectar offers entrepreneurial training, a pilot farm for regenerative agriculture, and a startup accelerator in partnership with @hec_paris —all designed to drive innovation and equip the next generation of farm leaders.

Audrey’s career also includes leadership in the French wine industry as General Delegate of Vin & Société, where she earned the title of “Woman of the Year 2014” by Revue du Vin de France.

She’s also worked with global brands like Baron Philippe de Rothschild and served as Agriculture Advisor to President Emmanuel Macron, where she championed policies supporting farmers and rural development.

Audrey’s leadership in France is particularly critical in addressing the unprecedented challenge of cross-generational renewal across Europe.

In France alone, 160,000 farms—nearly half of the country’s total—are set to transition to the next generation within the next four years. At the same time, across Europe, fewer than 12% of farmers are under the age of 40.

While mainstream media often portrays farmers as exhausted and undervalued, HECTAR works to present a radically different vision: one where farmers are agricultural business leaders, fully capable of creating immense value, improving their quality of life, and developing regenerative models that benefit both people and the planet.
