Beyond recognition, we are growing deep roots as a movement.

Vision

The vision of Top 50 Farmers is to accelerate the shift to resilient, regenerative farming in Europe by recognising and connecting leading farmers, positioning them at the centre of opportunity, capital, and industry influence.

Our vision extends to building a pan-European community of farmers while supporting bioregional networks, fostering collaboration, knowledge exchange, and locally adapted solutions.

What Does It Mean to Be a Top 50 Farmer?

Being recognized as a Top 50 Farmer reflects a commitment to healthy soils, regenerative management, innovation, and ethical leadership.

Top 50 Farmers is not about ranking or identifying the “best.” Inclusion reflects contribution, diversity, and the ability to inspire progress within regenerative farming and across society.

Farming in Europe is inherently diverse and context-specific, shaped by climate, soil, culture, and different stages of regenerative adoption. Within this diversity, “Top” refers to farmers who act as role models demonstrating leadership, building knowledge, and helping move the field forward in their respective contexts.

Recognition comes with visibility and responsibility. Farmers included are not presented as definitive examples of “the most advanced,” but as representatives of a broader movement making regenerative agriculture tangible, credible, valued and relevant across Europe.

Top 50 Farmers exists to strengthen the collective, not create hierarchy. By elevating a diverse group of role models, the initiative contributes to building a shared direction and accelerating the transition toward regenerative farming as the norm.

Why the Name Top 50 Farmers?

The word “Top” can suggest competition or hierarchy. In this context, it is used deliberately to drive narrative change.

Top 50 Farmers is designed to accelerate a shift that is already underway. The name captures attention, opens doors, and helps direct new resources into regenerative farming positioning farmers at the center of a transition that must become the norm.

At the same time, the work goes far beyond the name. Around it, deep roots are being built through long-term relationships, farmer-led learning, and the development of structures that support farmers in practice - not just in visibility.

Recognition is not an endpoint, but an entry point. It creates a platform for farmers to share their work, influence peers, and shape public understanding of farming as a profession that drives environmental, social, and economic outcomes.

We believe the name elevates leadership, builds momentum, and contributes to making regenerative farming the norm, not the exception.

Recognition Through Application

Beyond recognition, Top 50 Farmers delivers a community platform, a one-year, farmer-first accelerator program and long-term alumni network designed to strengthen leadership, unlock opportunities, and build lasting peer relationships. Through curated connections to capital, markets, and expertise, we translate visibility into tangible growth and industry influence.

Selection and Strategic Diversity

Our selection process goes beyond scoring, which serves as the foundation, and incorporates strategic considerations to intentionally design a diverse and representative cohort.

Our selection process is guided by clear criteria and strategic considerations to ensure consistency, transparency, and accountability while allowing the framework to evolve as Top 50 Farmers grows.

This approach ensures representation, fosters peer-to-peer learning, and inspires others by showcasing a variety of practices and pathways toward regenerative agriculture.

By embracing diversity in experience, geography, and scale, Top 50 Farmers strengthens a collaborative community that benefits the broader agricultural sector and society.

Selection Philosophy: Beyond Comparison

Our carefully designed selection process takes into account geographic, cultural, and bioregional diversity, stages of regenerative adoption, and the potential to foster learning and collaboration. This means that two farmers with different strengths may be evaluated differently based on the broader mission and vision of Top 50 Farmers.

Being included is a recognition of the inspiring work and contribution to collective growth, not a judgment of personal skill or achievement. Every farmer, whether in the Top 50 or not, plays a vital role in building a more resilient, innovative, and regenerative agricultural community.

Selection Limitations

We acknowledge that there will be exceptional farms not selected, limiting recognition to 50 requires difficult choices. Inclusion is not superiority; Deferring farms does not automatically mean these farms are not aligned with Top 50 Farmers; it comes down to cohort design; continuity we believe our legitimacy is based on transparency, clarity and consistency.

Transition Farms: What Does It Mean?

We intentionally include farms at different stages of their regenerative journey, with a target of 10% of participants in transition each year.

When we refer to ‘transition farms,’ it is farms that are still on their journey toward regenerative management.

Specifically, these farms are actively working to phase out synthetic inputs and chemicals while adopting more regenerative practices and in the end management. A clear vision of this roadmap is also an important eligibility criteria to apply for Top 50 Farmers.

Including transition farms in the Top 50 cohort ensures that we recognize progress, encourage learning, and inspire others by demonstrating the diversity of pathways toward regenerative farming. These farms bring valuable insights and practical examples of transformation in action, showcasing a roadmap for regeneration.

Farming Philosophies and Certifications

We recognize that regenerative agriculture looks different across farms, regions, and philosophies. Practices may include biodynamic methods, agroecology, holistic management, or other approaches, and Top 50 Farmers does not take a stand on specific philosophies or certifications.

What matters is a commitment to regenerative management, healthy soils, ecological stewardship, and ethical leadership.

By embracing diverse farming philosophies, Top 50 Farmers reflects the richness of regenerative agriculture and celebrates the multiple pathways that farmers take to achieve regeneration, resilience, and positive societal impact.

How is Top 50 Farmers Funded?

Top 50 Farmers is funded by family offices and foundations whose values align with our vision. We do not accept funding from agrochemical companies, or from any source that prioritizes short-term exposure over long-term impact, or that conflicts with our principles of regeneration, healthy soil, and community. The names of funders are publicly available on our website, reflecting our commitment to transparency and accountability.

Closing: Building a Movement

We are committed to learning, caring, and staying curious - growing Top 50 Farmers and the movement with reflection and purpose.
